Luego, lentamente, comenzó a ponersevestidos extraños y desconocidos.Y comencé inconscientemente a odiarla.
Well, I love it, although not everybody does, I know.In fact, when this statue, titled Perro 1 (= Dog 1), was first plonked down on the Estepona seafront, there were jokers saying we should get up a petition against Perro 2.☺️But I think it gives interest to the seafront, and people love having their photo here. Go on, get your phone out, and smile "Cheese"!.
People used to take their photo on the seafront promenade of Estepona next to a bronze statue of a 19th century tourist, complete with suitcase and map. That statue is now in the Calle Real, near the still-not-yet-opened Hotel Maravilla, after it was moved when they renovated the promenade. You can still take your photo there. But now there's a new statue for photos, on the promenade near the Correos Post Office. It is very much a Marmite statue, love it or loathe it, but take photos of it, people certainly do!It is another example of Estepona's claim to fame as an artistic town of culture and was erected on the Paseo Marítimo seafront promenade in June 2021.Perro I, that is Dog 1, is by the well-known Spanish sculptor Rafa Macarrón, is a cartoon dog brought to life. Well brought to artistic life, if not real life, as this large metal sculpture. It sort of grows on you. But people are saying “Please spare us Dog 2!”Give it a visit, take your group photos, see what you think. It is already a magnet for photographers as families and friends group round it to immortalize their visit to beautiful #Estepona!
Contemporary art sculpture work - Perro I', by Rafa Macarrón inspired by the artist's affection for pets and his memory of nature walks with his dog. Nice looking piece of art by the sea front / promenade area.

The bronze statue of the tourist that used to be on the seafront promenade in Estepona, is without a doubt the most popular photo opportunity in the town. It is now on the Calle Real, by the new Hotel Maravilla Palace, sitting on a bench, just waiting for you!You - or your friend/partner/children/whoever sit down next to him, for someone to take a photo.Made in bronze, consulting his map with his old-fashioned suitcase next to him, he presents an image of the tourist of the past, perhaps. He certainly didn't come on EasyJet with that luggage. His knee-high socks with his shorts also give away his age.But it IS good to sit down for a photo here! When he was on the Seafront Promenade, you could get a photo with palm trees in the background. Here there are no palm trees, but masses of flowers all around.Make the most of this beautiful spot, take a photo!
Another great example of what they do with tumbledown houses in Estepona! With a fun added extra. The Town Hall buys up an old house falling to ruin. Often it's owned by a number of people, the sons, daughters and grandchildren of the most recent inhabitant. They finish knocking it down, and make a little square, or a passageway between two streets. Add a bench, sometimes a fountain, always flowerpots, perhaps a tree or two, and make an abandoned old house into a lovely spot. Here there is an added extra: a slide! There is a great difference in level between the two streets that have been joined, so they put steps for pedestrians, and a tube slide for both adults and children to go down. By the side of the slide there are handholds, rather like a climbing wall, for you to climb back up and have another go.So, how about if you have a disability, or a pushchair? You can't use the steps or the slide.Never mind. Just 20 metres further along, (on the left if you're at the bottom, on the right if you're at the top) is the Calle Azorin which also joins the two streets, and has a nice ramp for you to go up or down easily!

El Rincón de la Saeta - the corner dedicated to the Saeta, the heartful song that is sung in Semana Santa - Holy Week - to the images of Jesus and Mary in the processions. It's just at the top of the Calle Sevilla, a stone's throw from the main Parish church.Calle Sevilla has three charming little squares made where an old house has been pulled down. Walk down past this spot and see the others too: Pasaje de Doña Francisca Contreras and Pasaje de María Cintrano. The Rincón de la Saeta is a truly lovely little corner of Estepona, with flowerpots and a bust of Antonio Machado, the poet who wrote the well-known poem about the Saeta. It is on the wall here, on a ceramic poetry plaque. This is a favourite place for people to take photos, either leaning against the bust of Machado, or sitting on the bench. Get your friends and family all lined up!Here is my own English translation of the poem."A voice called from the crowd:"Who will lend me a ladderto climb the wooden crossto remove the nailsfrom Jesus of Nazareth?"Oh, the saeta, the songto Christ of the gypsies, always with blood-stained hands, from always removing the nailsSong of the Andalusian peoplewhere every springthey go asking for laddersto climb up to the crossSong of my homelandthat tosses flowersto the Jesus of agonythe faith of my forefathersOh, you are not my song!I cannot sing, nor want toto this Jesus of the cross, but to He who walked on the waters of the sea"A very emotional, very Andalusian, poem, and a charming corner of beautiful Estepona.Gorgeous!
This must be one of the prettiest places in one of the prettiest towns in all Spain! It is well worth while seeking it out when you visit the main church, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. Standing in front of the church main entrance, looking away from the church, go towards the street and turn left down that street, the Calle Blas Ortega. At the little crossroads, carry straight on into the C/ Sevilla and in 50 yards it is there on your left. It's such a tiny little space, it seems impossible that it was previously a house. Yes, a whole house was there, with people living in it for probably nearly a century. When the last inhabitant died a few years ago, the Town bought it up for peanuts, knocked it down, and made this lovely space. The poetry on the wall is a Saeta, a song by gypsies to honour Christ or the Virgen during the Easter Holy Week processions. It is by Antonio Machado, a very famous poet who was born in Andalucia, in Seville. There's a bench there, a popular place for people to sit and have their photo taken, as is grouping around the bust of Machado.
The heart of this gorgeous little town is its Old Town, which is just like a garden! It's called "The Garden of the Costa del Sol" for a reason: because it is filled with flowers all year round. And especially in the gorgeous little streets and plazas in the centre of town.It all started in about 2012 when they needed to do something about the water supply to some of the streets in the Old Town, which involved digging up the streets."How about instead of putting down more tarmac, we put down pretty cobbles or pebbles?" said one person. "We could take away the parking too, thereby opening up the streets", said another. "Or even just plan a few drive-through routes, and make the rest of them pedestrianised", was another contribution. "People whitewash their houses regularly, and many people have a few pots. How about having a planned display of pots, co-ordinating the colours and the flowers, and setting up apprenticeships in gardening to have youngsters learning how to look after the plants?".And so the beautiful heart of Estepona was born! There are over a hundred of these renovated and decorated streets and plazas. In a dozen places, a tumble-down house has been bought by the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) the space cleared, and a charming little square built with a fountain, a bench, and pots. In other places, a whole street has changed out of all recognition as people can now sit outside, chat with neighbours, watch the municipal pot-waterers on their rounds with huge cisterns on wheels! You can stroll at leisure, turning here and there, every corner shows another beautiful street. It's just gorgeous!
El corazón del pueblo de Estepona, the Heart of the town of Estepona. So beautiful! It's hard to pick what is its true heart, but I guess that here, in front of the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the town parish church, is as good a place as any.The church itself is the site of many celebrations and ceremonies. Some private, (weddings, baptisms, funerals), and many public, especially the various religious events throughout the year, Saint's Days, Christmas, Cruces de Mayo, Corpus Christi, and the glory that is Holy Week with its processions. And glorious too are all the beautiful, charming, colourful, almost traffic-free streets and squares all around, here in the heart of the beautiful town of Estepona.
Plaza De San Francisco En El Centro Mismo Del Pueblo
A quiet spot in the bustle of the town, with a tinkling fountain and plenty of seats, even though it is very small. Lovely place to sit and rest, or read, or eat an ice-cream bought next door.At first we all called it the Plaza de las Palmeras. Because palm trees is what it has! But then it was officially dedicated by the Town Hall to the flamenco artiste Rocio Bazan, who was born in Estepona. A lovely gesture! This little square was newly created in 2019, and very welcome it was too.It is very little, slotted in between three streets: Real, Teatro and Malaga. Its recent history is interesting.Once there was a house here with its front door on the Calle Real, but it had fallen into disrepair. The owner, or his/her heirs, sold it to a developer who knocked it down and started to build a small block of flats. A hideous sight! They didn't get very far with the building, just the foundations and a skeleton of iron scaffolding with concrete pillars and one concrete floor. The 2018 Google view shows this, with the pots of red geraniums put there by the Town Hall to try and soften the ugliness. Awful!I don't know why the building got no further. Did the developer run out of money? Did the Town Hall put a stop to it because it broke some planning law?But for a number of years we had on this site first a derelict house and then an ugly iron and concrete structure. So what a delight when, in early 2019, the ugly partially-built structure was dismantled, the ground prepared, the palm trees planted, the seats installed and a tiny fountain placed in the centre of this charming new little square! Then in 2020 they bought some more land and extended it, so nowadays it is a quite idyllic place with more seating. Idyllic is just the word for it, in fact.
